I got to thinking about this question this week for my own blog and thought I’d share what I’ve found:
On why and how you should switch to Tumblr:
- GigaOM’s take on Steve Rubel’s Nuking of his Blog and moving to Tumblr (via BrilliantForge). This post is really what got me thinking…
- One developer’s advice on how to switch from WordPress to Tumblr
- How to host your Tumblr on a custom domain (e.g. prestonsmalley.com)
On why you should stay put on WordPress:
- Quora thread mostly recommending to stay with self-hosted WordPress especially if you’re willing to put in the time to customize all the SEO settings / plugins.
- On why this person switched from Tumblr to WordPress due to the poor SEO he found using Tumblr.
I’m still deciding what I should do. I’ve been on WordPress (self-hosted) for several years now but have recently slowed my blogging. However I am quite active on Twitter and think one of the main reasons is that the bar’s much lower to share (and I can do it easily on my iPhone). I’m intregged by the idea that Tumblr could become the center of my online presense effectively agregating my tweets and other shares. It also would give me the outlet to be a bit more verbose on topics (such as this one) that are just too hard to fit into a tweet or two.
That said the migration looks like it will take a bit of work (I’ve got about 100 posts and DNS I’d like to migrate to save Google pagerank) so I want to make sure it’s the right move before I do it.
Thoughts?
